Restaurant Alexandre – A touch of New Nordic Cuisine in Brussels

Ok, so where do I start. I have so many impressions and feelings towards Restaurant Alexandre, which is located just on Rue du Midi that I have to be careful not to drool on my keyboard when thinking back to this outstanding lunch.

Are you also tired of cities sometimes? Craving some fresh air, leaving the congested and loud streets that run through your neighborhood? See some nature and go for a walk that’s more than a tour through your local park?

Soup. Soup can be quite a boring dish, but when prepared well and with the right spices it can be a unique experience. Especially Asian soups with lots of spices and interesting ingredients are something that many people, me included, are crazy about.

When we arrived in front of Nonbe Daigaku on a rainy Saturday evening (Hello Brussels!), I was a bit hesitant whether this was really the place that looked so nice on the pictures I had previously seen. There was a big phone number made from red tape, glued to the window, a not too inviting entrance door and a quite worn-down facade.

I am always a bit scared to go back to restaurants twice. It happened too many time already that when coming back the food wasn’t as good, because the cook had a bad day, or the service wasn’t as nice as the first time I went, or the restaurant has decided to change its interior entirely, sometimes to a worse in my opinion. It’s some kind of non-fulfillment of expectations anxiety. But on the other hand, like this I can be really certain to recommend a restaurant: when it was great many times.

New year, new spot. La Figoule, located quite towards the end of Avenue Louise, not far from Bois de la Cambre, is a new restaurant that popped up about four months ago.

40 years old. That’s quite something, isn’t it?! To be precise, it’s the age of a lovely Portuguese restaurant in St Gilles, Brussels, called Coimbra.

This post is certainly not for vegetarians. Or maybe it is, because if you see this delicious piece of steak it might make you want to eat meat again.

I haven't written an individual post on a restaurant for a long time now. Simply, because I think that most people are more interested in an overview of several places, rather than reading 10 posts about different places (Tell me if I am wrong, I am happy to change this). Also, it obviously takes up more time, which I don't always have. But this one here is worth it.

Kitchen 151 deserves its own post - and here is why. First of all, I've spotted the place already during my first weekend here in Brussels in the beginning of November. As always, I start exploring the city by walking around, making a turn into little streets and discovering hidden places. So I had a look at their menu and it sounded very appealing, Middle eastern cuisine with an Ottolenghi-ish twist. The interior looked a lot like places that I normally like to go to; simple, yet nicely decorated - lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling, decorated with flowers, colorful water jugs and dried flowers - a wooden floor, simple wooden tables, pastel colors and that cosy feeling that you get when entering the place and sitting down.

Bordeaux is a lovely, historic little city in the South-West of France. With its proximity to the sea and famous for its wine regions, the city is a destination for many tourists from around the globe, but as well for French people themselves. Many even call it 'Little Paris', because it's as atmospheric and the architecture is very alike, just the stress is less with a smaller number of cars and buzzing sounds.

As it's a university city and a well-known location for Erasmus exchange, there is many young people, cool bars, modern cafés and restaurants. There is a river and as it's the case with many cities, life is centered mainly on the left river bank. There is a nice artsy area and some projects appearing on the right side, but that's rather an exception.

Mornings are for brunch! Especially on a hangover weekend's morning. Paris is becoming more and more brunchy and even though I tried my best, I didn't visit all of them and there is still some places left that are waiting for me.

Two months have passed since I moved to the city of love, lights and food. I have a huge list with places I want to visit, tons of books about Paris that I still need to read and every day I see more bars and restaurants that look very lovely.

Twice to three times a year I am visiting the city, in which I partly grew up and went to school. Back then, I wasn’t interested as much in food and restaurants as I am now, but I always enjoyed getting to know new places around town. However, during these times there weren’t a lot of places to explore; a few coffee chains (OMG, a Starbucks opened!!), food chains and other small restaurants that were pretty good, but existed already for ages; which was good – I am a fan of traditional places that haven’t changed over the last 50 years, but there were no new culinary things to explore...

I did mention some day that I am a huge fan of Churros, didn't I?! I even made them myself one time (HERE). If you now ask yourself, what the hell these Churros are..well, it is heaven in your mouth - a very greasy "pastry" made out of a sticky dough dipped and coated in sugar, chocolate or dulce de leche. A dream, right? The best place to try them is definitely Spain or South America.

A fantastic restaurant in Berlin Mitte, close to Unter den Linden and Friedrichstrasse, serving creative and very tasteful vegetarian (and on request even vegan) dishes.

Good morning dear Berliners! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, which you should not skip; and you won't after you've seen this place.
